My Inspiration
Boutique Rivals began as a much larger game about running your own fashion boutique. The original concept came from a game design contest that challenged people to use dice in unconventional ways. While developing ideas, I found myself thinking about playing with fashion plates as a kid.
As I developed the original Boutique game, one thing quickly became clear during playtesting and demoing, the most enjoyable part was creating the outfits themselves. Mixing and matching clothing items to discover stylish combinations captured the same creative feeling I remembered from those fashion plates.
This led to Boutique Rivals. I stripped away the larger management systems and focused on the creative element, designing outfits, competing to set the hottest trends, and building a boutique with a great reputation. That is not to say, however, that one day I won’t revisit the original design.
